What a private ADHD assessment costs in the UK

The assessment fee is the number everyone searches for. It is also the least useful number, because it is not what ADHD treatment actually costs. Here is the whole picture, including the parts that catch people out.

The four costs, not one

The assessment. A diagnostic appointment with a psychiatrist, plus a written report. This is the figure clinics advertise.

Titration. If you are diagnosed and medication is appropriate, getting to the right drug at the right dose takes several appointments over some weeks. Not every clinic includes this, and some do not offer it at all, which leaves you diagnosed and then stranded.

The medication itself. If your GP takes over prescribing under shared care, you pay NHS prescription charges or nothing if you are exempt. If they decline, you pay the pharmacy the full private cost, every month, indefinitely.

Ongoing reviews. Anyone on ADHD medication needs periodic review. That is clinical necessity, not clinic policy.

A cheap assessment at a clinic that does not offer titration, followed by a GP who declines shared care, is the expensive option. Work out the whole path before you compare headline prices.

Why we do not publish a single figure

Our fees depend on whether the assessment is for an adult or a child, and on the clinician. Please contact us and we will tell you exactly what your situation costs before you commit to anything.

What we will say is that we offer titration, so you are not diagnosed and then sent elsewhere to find treatment, and the written report is included rather than charged as an extra.

The free route, which you should consider first

If you are in England with an English GP, NHS Right to Choose lets you have an ADHD assessment funded by the NHS, at no cost. It is slower, and a growing number of local commissioners have restricted it, but it is free. Our Right to Choose page explains how to use it and what to say to your GP.

We would rather tell you that than take money from someone who did not need to spend it.

The cost nobody warns you about

Ask your GP practice one question before you spend anything: do you currently accept new shared care agreements for ADHD.

Several Local Medical Committees and Primary Care Networks have advised practices to stop accepting new ADHD shared care agreements, citing workload and local prescribing guidance. Practices that agreed two years ago may refuse now. This applies equally to NHS Right to Choose diagnoses and private ones.

If the answer is no, medication costs stand up privately for as long as you take it. That changes the total considerably, and you are entitled to know before you book, not after.

Questions to ask any clinic before paying

Is the written report included, or extra.

Do you offer titration, and what does it cost.

Who carries out the assessment, and what are their qualifications.

What happens if I am not diagnosed with ADHD.

How often will I need reviews, and what do they cost.

That fourth question is the revealing one. You are paying for an assessment, not for a diagnosis, and a meaningful proportion of people assessed do not meet the criteria. Any service that implies otherwise is selling something other than medicine.
