Schema Therapy

Posted on: 9th July 2018

A schema is a repeating, negative pattern of thought and behaviour that typically begins early on in life. For example, individuals with an abandonment schema fear that others will leave, which affects their relationships with others. Dr. Jeff Young founded Schema Therapy after noticing that other types of therapy were not sufficient for patients who had certain negative feelings embedded in them since childhood. Schema Therapy is an excellent treatment to tackle inner demons that have been residing in your mind for a while now.

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema Therapy is an Integrative Psychotherapy in which your therapist assists you in adjusting your way of thinking and your habits. Your therapist begins by assessing what types of schema are prevalent in your life and identifying how they have affected you.Next, your therapist will assist you in minimizing your negative feelings and changing your attitude towards your schema. Nearing the end of your therapy, breaking  unhealthy behaviours will be the focus.

What issues might Schema Therapy be used for?

  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)
  • Other personality disorders
  • Depression
