EMDR Therapy

Posted on: 29th October 2014

EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is  a treatment for all sorts of traumas and even phobias. EMDR is a relatively new approach that was first discovered in the USA. By alternating left-right stimulation of the brain where the patient’s eyes move from side to side it was noted that distressing or traumatic memories can be helped.

Why does it work?

No-one knows how it works all we know is that is can be extremely effective.

What happens?

In your EMDR session you will be asked to think of the traumatic event and your therapist will ask you to follow their finger with your eyes  back and forth for about 15 to 30 seconds whilst you recall this trauma. You can also use audio stimulation or hand tapping. if you prefer. Several sessions are necessary but results can be dramatic.

What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy is used for individuals who have experienced a traumatic, distressing or upsetting event. This therapy uses brain stimulation to release an individual’s emotional experiences which are trapped within the nervous system. The therapy allows for the mind and body to free itself of negative experiences and re connect itself with positive ones.

What does Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy involve?

Your therapist will work with you to relive your distressing event and recall the experience, this may involve, smells, tastes, feelings and any other senses which may have been active at the time. Your therapist will then begin to move his/her fingers before your eyes in order to track your eye movements. As the therapy proceeds the individual will find the memory easier to recall and relive. Once the memory has been relived your therapist can work with you to turn the negative experience into a more positive one.
